Douglas Hertz Performs at National Sawdust with Finnegan Shanahan

Douglas Hertz (b. 1993) is a composer and percussionist currently residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

His work has appeared on programs presented by the Atlantic Music Festival, the Dynamic Music Festival, Bard College’s Music Alive series and the Deer Valley Music Festival. His first symphonic work was read and recorded by James Blachly conducting the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and later performed by the American Symphony Orchestra conducted by maestro Leon Botstein. His music also has been performed by the Walden School Players, members of the Wet Ink Ensemble, the Da Capo Chamber Players and the Denovo Quartet.

As a performer, Douglas can most regularly be found behind the drum set, but is equally at home as a classical percussionist, having performed in ensembles such as Contemporaneous, the Da Capo Chamber Players and the Bard Conservatory Orchestra, as well as New York-based bands The Sifters, Esterhazy and Lovechild.

Douglas completed his undergraduate degree at Bard College where, upon graduating, he was awarded the Margaret Creal Schaefer Prize in composition. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in composition from the University of Michigan. His primary teachers have included George Tsontakis, Joan Tower, Kyle Gann, and Janet Weir.
